The Golden Rules (Code of Conduct)
Be on Time – Everyone in this league relies on each other to show up AND be on time. There is very limited to no flexibility with late starts.
Respect – There is ABSOLUTELY no tolerance for violence or disrespect towards players, organizers, volunteers, spectators, or sponsors.
Respect the Equipment and Property – Respect the space we were given. There will be no tolerance for damaging fields, courts, or any equipment. Players will be banned (without refund) and held responsible for damage to the property of others. Additionally, there is no alcohol allowed at Carrier Park.
Respect the Rules – This is an official league. The league rules ARE THE RULES and are not open to interpretation.
Communication – If you have a problem with a team/player or have an issue that needs to be addressed, please come talk to us.
Sportsmanship – No one likes a cheater or a sore loser. Play fair and take the L like the adults we all are. Tantrums that become disruptive will not be tolerated.
Integrity – Do the right thing even if no one saw it. Call yourself on rule violations.
Colorful Language – There will be colorful expressions during play so if you plan on bringing your kids, be aware of that. At the same time, we ask you to be considerate of players who bring young ones. Name-calling, harassing, and derogatory language will not be tolerated.
Be an Ambassador – Please act as an appropriate member of this league—be it on the court or at a sponsored event.
Play Hard Be Kind (Our Golden Rule) – For anything we may have missed or when in doubt, err on the side of the golden rule.
What are the general rules?
Advanced (Open, AA, and A) will be playing regular AVP rules. Detailed rules here.
The following rules apply to all divisions:
Touching the Net – If you contact any portion of the net during play, it is a fault.
Courtesy Rule – 50/50 court division. Ideally, male players are expected to serve the opposing team’s male player's half of the court and vice versa. Female players can serve either side of the court. If a male player serves a female player, the game continues, it is not a fault, however, the male player should always try to limit serving to females.
Block as a Touch – Block counts as one of the team's allowed three ball contacts.
Court Boundary – You may not pursue a ball onto another adjacent court while that court is being used for play.
Antennas – We do not use antennas. The ball is considered in within the net poles.
Setting – No doubles. Sets must be clean, with minimal spin.
Open Hand Tipping – Not allowed.
Hard Driven Ball – Setting, open hand, allowed for first contact on a hard-driven ball. Hard-driven is defined as a ball you don’t have time to think about (not a free ball over, or a soft hit).
Game Delays – We have a 10-minute grace period; 1 point will be deducted for every minute a team is late. After 30 minutes, the team forfeits the match. Additionally, all players/teams are required to provide a sufficient 24-hour notice if they cannot attend a game or find a sub. First no-show is a warning, after that a team is eliminated from the current season without a refund.
No Center Line Violations – If a player goes under the net during play, it is not a fault, unless it interferes with the other team’s ability to play the ball.
Redirecting a Block – Redirecting a block is legal as long as there is no extended contact (catch/throw).
Timeouts – A single one-minute timeout per set is allowed per team.

We understand that this means an extra cost for participants but this partnership is key in supporting the growth and quality of volleyball in our community. We want to make sure that if you have any questions or concerns, we can address them so please don't hesitate to reach out to us.
What is your sub policy?
First and foremost, we want to stress the importance of having a sub if you or your partner will not be able to make your games. Players have adjusted their schedules and commitments to play in this league, and we ask that each team respects everyone’s time by ensuring their opponents are able to play as planned that evening. The following rules apply to subs:
No-Shows (with no subs): first no-show is a warning; second no-show You will be removed from this league.
Registered league members have access to our sub list, please check your emails for information.
If you would like someone that is not in our sub list to sub for one of your games, please have them fill out a sub registration form. Only registered subs are allowed to sub in our league.
During regular league play, if you and your partner will both miss a game but you get subs (must be of comparable skill level/same division), the result of that game will still count. It is not a forfeit.
When finding a sub, please find someone of a comparable skill level to your teammate, especially for playoffs.
Subs can only sub for the skill level they signed up for.
For playoffs, one registered team member must be present. Your sub needs to be approved by League directors before playoffs.
A female can sub for a male player.
Once playoffs start, you must play with the same person for all your games. In case of injury, you will have to forfeit your game(s).
No subs are allowed for tournaments.
What skill level am I?
B is for beginners who are still working on basic skills. Minimal ball control.
BB is our intermediate level competition. Players have limited training on individual volleyball skills. Hand setting calls are not quite as strict, but doubles and lifts are still considered a foul. Consistent 3 hit rallies.
A is our advanced level competition. Players have trained on individual volleyball skills. Advanced setting and serving. Good defense.
AA is for elite level competition. Players have trained extensively on individual volleyball skills. Excellent setting with high velocity attacks. Float, jump float, and/or high-velocity jump serving. Pinpoint passing.
How do I sign up?

What if I don't have a partner?
Join the AVL Grass Pickup Facebook group to ask about other people looking for partners.
What if I can't make it to a game?
It is very important that you find a sub if one or both players can't make a game. Please see the Sub Policy on this page for more details. Other team players can sub for you if they are not playing in your same time slot. If you can't find a female and male to sub for you, you can have two females play. Two males can play but you will forfeit the match.
What is your inclement weather cancellation policy?
If the rain is light, games will continue.
If the field is flooded or has not dried enough for play, games will be canceled for safety and to prevent damaging the field.
Lightning within a 10-mile radius will stop play. Play will continue if lightning clears within an appropriate amount of time.
We will try to make up as many games canceled due to weather, as field availability allows.
What do I get if I win this league?
After operating costs are covered, winners get to direct their cash prizes to their local charity of choice. The prize amounts are contingent on the total number of teams and will fluctuate per season. Additionally, winners across all divisions not only receive a "CHAMP" tech shirt, but also secure bragging rights indefinitely.
